Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Review: Is It Worth $1,799?
The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the most capable robot vacuum we have ever tested. After 6 weeks of daily use, here is our complete verdict on whether the $1,799 price tag is justified.
Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra: Six Weeks of Real-World Testing
The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra arrived with enormous expectations. At $1,799, it is one of the most expensive robot vacuums available, and Roborock's marketing promises represent it as the pinnacle of home cleaning technology. After six weeks of daily use in a 3,200 sq ft home with two dogs and hardwood floors throughout, we can confirm: the hype is largely justified.
Design and Build Quality
The S8 MaxV Ultra has a premium feel that matches its price. The robot unit itself is finished in a clean white with subtle silver accents, measuring 13.9 inches in diameter and 3.8 inches tall. The build quality is exceptional — there are no flex points or cheap-feeling panels anywhere.
The RockDock Ultra station is substantial, measuring approximately 16 x 12 x 18 inches. It houses the auto-empty dustbin, water tank, dirty water collection, and the mop washing and drying system. The station requires a dedicated power outlet and enough floor space to accommodate it — plan accordingly.
Suction Performance: 10,000 Pa in Practice
Roborock's 10,000 Pa HyperForce suction is not just a marketing number. In our standardized debris tests, the S8 MaxV Ultra achieved a 99.2% pickup rate on hard floors and 97.8% on medium-pile carpet — both category-leading results.
The dual rubber brush roll is excellent at preventing hair tangles, a common frustration with bristle-based brushes. After six weeks of cleaning a home with two dogs, we found only minimal hair wrapped around the brush — a significant improvement over previous generations.
The FlexiArm side brush is a genuine innovation. It extends outward to reach corners and along walls, picking up debris that traditional side brushes leave behind. In our edge-cleaning tests, the S8 MaxV Ultra collected 34% more debris along walls than the previous S8 Pro Ultra.
Mopping Performance: Hot Water Makes the Difference
The mopping system is where the S8 MaxV Ultra truly distinguishes itself. The hot water mop washing system heats water to 140°F to clean the mop pads, which makes a measurable difference in mopping effectiveness.
In our dried coffee stain test on sealed hardwood, the S8 MaxV Ultra removed 94% of the stain in a single pass — the highest score of any robot vacuum we have tested. The mop pads apply consistent pressure and the sonic vibration system helps loosen stubborn stains.
The automatic carpet detection and mop lifting work reliably. In 50 carpet-to-hardfloor transition tests, the mop lifted correctly 49 times — a 98% success rate.
ReactiveAI 3.0: Obstacle Avoidance
The ReactiveAI 3.0 system uses a combination of structured light 3D sensors and an RGB camera to identify and avoid obstacles. In our testing with 73 different objects, the system correctly identified and avoided 71 of them — a 97.3% success rate.
Notably, it correctly avoided pet waste in all five tests — a critical capability for dog owners. It also reliably identified and avoided charging cables, which are a common obstacle that cheaper robots get tangled in.
App and Smart Features
The Roborock app is well-designed and feature-rich. The mapping system creates detailed floor plans that can be divided into rooms, and the room-specific cleaning settings are genuinely useful. You can set different suction levels, mopping intensity, and cleaning schedules for each room.
The Matter support (added in a firmware update) allows integration with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa without requiring the Roborock app for basic controls.
Self-Maintenance: The 8-in-1 RockDock Ultra
The RockDock Ultra handles auto-emptying, mop washing, mop drying, and water refilling automatically. In practice, this means the robot can operate for 2-3 weeks without any human intervention beyond occasionally refilling the clean water tank.
The auto-empty system uses a powerful suction to transfer debris from the robot's dustbin to the station's sealed bag. The process takes about 15 seconds and is moderately loud — comparable to a hairdryer.
Verdict: Is It Worth $1,799?
Yes — with caveats. The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is the best robot vacuum we have ever tested. If you have a large home with mixed flooring, pets, and the budget to match, it is the clear choice.
However, if you primarily have hard floors, the Narwal Freo X Ultra offers comparable mopping at $700 less. And if you do not need mopping at all, the iRobot Roomba j9+ delivers excellent vacuum performance at $1,099.
Score: 9.6/10
